Land back to the Kogi

A group of Kogi at Nabi Nunhue

The Kogi are attached to their traditional way of living. They live in harmony with their natural environment and are completely independent from the outer world. They do not ask for development projects, they only want their land back.

From the start of the Spanish conquest, colonists have occupied land of the Kogi. The Kogi have founded the organisation Gondawindua Tayrona for the acquisition of land for their community. Land has already been bought for this purpose. Nowadays, new Kogi communities are living on it and a big part was given back to nature.

Gondawindua Tayrona has asked SKOP (a Dutch foundation for small scale development projects) to raise funds for the acquisition of the Don Diego Valley. This is the valley of Jaba Mitamsama, the mother of all birds. There are many sacred places in this valley.

Untill recently, colonists cultivated coca plants for the cocain production. Fights between armed groups like the guerrila, the para military, the army and the maffia took place in this area. As soon as this land is given back in the hands of the Kogi, they shall first proceed with a ‘spiritual cleaning’. Then, new communities shall be founded.

The Don Diego Valley is about 25 hectares and will be bought step by step, depending on the donated money.
